Welcome to Upper Missouri Country. A blend of beauty and ethnic heritage, wildlife, rolling hills and rich farmland are just part of your welcome to Northeast Nebraska.
The area is bordered on the North by Lewis and Clark Lake, the last of the lakes on the Missouri River. Beautiful bluffs and wooded hills line it's shores. An impressive panoramic view can be seen where the Niobrara River enters the Missouri from Niobrara State Park.
A rich heritage is a blend of many cultures. The American Indian is visible with the Santee Sioux Reservation in Knox County and the Ponca Tribe headquarters in Niobrara. Wausa was founded by the Swedes a century ago. The heritage endures with Swedish events, houses and main street building that the Nebraska Historic Buildings Survey identifies as true Swedish architecture. The Old World Dala Horses add to the atmosphere. Verdigre shows its Czech heritage with the annual Kolache Days celebration in June. The Norwegian Heritage of Niobrara and Verdel and the German Heritage of Crofton, Bloomfield and Creighton are also seen in Northeast Nebraska. O'Neill is the Irish Capital of Nebraska.
Don't miss the great fossil find at Ashfall State Park. Visit Reuben the chimpanzee at the Northeast Nebraska Zoo in Royal. Discover unique antique shops, craft shops and museums.
The area shares the Lewis and Clark Trail along the Missouri River and many stories of the James Brothers, Jesse and Frank.
There is a good population of deer, wild turkey, pheasants and other wildlife. Fishing can be done at Lewis and Clark Lake and many ponds and creeks in the area. There are golf courses, ball diamonds, tennis courts and swimming pools. Picnic grounds and camping areas are abundant.
